Swimming back to shore on Wake Island for a few minutes, after losing your jet, only to have a bomb dropped on me by a watchful pilot - yeah it felt frustrating. But damn if they weren't fucking crazy fun. Vehicles were shitty to acquire, and often short lived. It also meant that you could join any random ranked server without having to worry about shit connection - that isn't an issue these days, but back then joining a random server on a game like CS:Source was a crapshoot. However, as a new server renter, I appreciated the extra level of customer support - I was able to set up mods and other customs safely, you could do a lot of that while maintaining EA ranking support. It also cost more as getting a hosting license from EA required a lot of steps. Many customisations required server owner approvals. The server hosting options were definitely a sign of the sad times to come - you could only rent through official server providers, and had limited options for customisation. When you stamped out several anti-fun player behaviours like that, you found the meta evolve in really interesting ways. Did people get kicked/banned? Yes, but we ran several servers that were max capacity 24/7 for years due to people appreciating the enforcement of the rules. We ran extremely popular servers in AU and it was in part due to our house rules. But the openness of servers meant you could enforce whatever rules you wanted on your own servers.

Strike At Karkand turned into a non-stop nade fest after about a year or so (Aussie servers were behind the US meta). I was a General within 1 month of 2142 launching, whereas I was barely an officer after years of BF2. It felt meaningful in a way that hasn't existed since then. The downside to that, was that your unlocks were based on rank, so you had to be super careful about your rank choice (from memory, there wasn't a way to reset unlock choice in bf2?). I appreciate a game that has the guts to say "only the hardcore are going to get to this". I don't think everyone should be able to be a 4-star General rank. The ranking system was shockingly aggressive. It's extremely flawed, but there's something about the way the flaws played out that made them so damned fun. I'll die on the hill that BF2 was far and away the best Battlefield game. The below is a rant about Battlefield 2 - I know this is Project Reality related but I need to vent.
